What is an Eco School?
Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education program that addresses both how the schools are run and what students learn. Participating schools will incorporate environmental education as well as environmentally responsible action into the school setting. Student success—in both academics and positive contributions to society—is the focus of Ontario EcoSchools. The program aims to influence young people during a formative period of life, and affect an exponential impact as children take a culture of conservation home with them.

The purposes of this project are to:
1. Provide teachers with environmental education resource units for elementary and secondary grades based on the Ontario Curriculum
2. Provide guides that promote taking individual action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
3. Align what is taught in classrooms with school operations (curriculum & facilities)
4. Save money and reduce our impact on the environment (e.g., conserve energy and minimize waste) at both the Board and individual school levels and provide related opportunities for learning and action outside the classroom to reinforce classroom education.

The four pillars of the Ontario EcoSchools program are: waste minimization, energy conservation, school ground greening, and ecological literacy. Schools are recognized for their efforts using a point system and certification is awarded. (Gold, Silver, Bronze based on the programs success)

Why at Central?
Staff and students have been involved with environmental club for some years, by participating in this program we will help raise the environmental awareness of all staff and students and help our school become a better place to work and learn. Prior to our “official establishment” there were several staff members that participated in teacher Staff Development and are certified in the eco school project. Mrs.W. Fletcher and Ms.Celi have made presentations to all staff during several of our fall 2007 staff meetings.

The Eco Team was officially established in December 5th, 2007

Nov 2007 Initial Energy assessment:
Initial Energy Conservation EcoReview was completed during the last week of November 2007 by members of the Environmental Club under the guidance of Wendy Fletcher. Students walked through each classroom in the building to determine energy use. Statistics on this will be available shortly. After they collected data, Lights off and Monitors off stickers were placed around the school.
